Anatole, Charle ( 1922-1980 )
BIOGRAPHY
Charles Anatole ( 1922-1980 ) Nader’s Art Gallery is proud to remind that it was the first to discover the natural talent of the Haitian painter Charles Anatole in presenting him to the Haitian and foreign public. Since then, Charles Anatole has constantly caught the attention of the international and national art critics who have discovered that his painting overflows of health, realism and truth. By his style as well as by his colors, Charles Anatole belongs to the famous “School of the North” whose Eugenio Fernandez Mendez talks about in his book the “ Haitian Primitivism.” Charles Anatole was born on November 4th, 1922. He comes from Cap-Haitian where he pursues his primary studies at the “ freres de l’Institution Chretienne”. He started painting in 1940. His first painting is actually hanging at the ‘pharmacy Dupont” located in Cap-Haitian. On June 23, 1973, he had a one-man show at Nader’s Art Gallery located in Croix Desprez, Haiti. The exhibit has provoked the admiration of all art lovers. And artist named Dominique also from the North said Charles Anatole was the teacher of the late famous artist, St-Louis Blaise. Charles Anatole also exhibited in Venezuela at the Durban Gallery in May 1973, in Port-au-Prince in July 1973 at Nader’s art Gallery in Desprez then at Susuki Gallery in a permanent exhibition in New Jersey. In 1977, his art was sold at the auction sale in Parke Bennett, New York. The writers M. Serge St- Jean and Eugenio Fernandez Mendez have first noticed in the Haitian newspaper” Le Nouvelliste” dated May 19, 1973 and his last book “ Le Primitivisme Haitien”, the art works by Charles Anatole. The magazine “Going Places” in its February and March 1978 issues has given to Haiti a picture of his painting in front page. In its January 1978 Edition the Literary magazine “ Saturday Reviews” has reproduced a magnificent painting of the Haitian artist Charles Anatole. It was a great and beautiful success that had made the pride of the artist whose name is being internationally known. Charles Anatole died in Cap-Haitian on November 1980. However his art works are still alive at the Nader’s art Galleries and Musee d’Art Nader in Haiti and at Galerie d’Art Nader in Miami, Florida for such talented artist will never die in the heart of the Haitian art lovers.
