DORCELY, ROLAND

Roland Dorcely was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on November 18th. 1930. He was schooled at St-Louis de Gonzague and Petion High School. After joining the “Centre d’Art” in 1946, he traveled to France the same year, where he studied with Andre Masson and Fernand Leger. 

In 1954, Dorcely founded with the famous artist Luckner Lazard “Brochette” and participated at the Hall of Plastic Arts. In 1962 he returned to France to live in Paris until 1969 when he moved back to Haiti. On his way to France, he was invited to exhibit in Los Angeles by the famous Black American architect Paul Williams. In Paris he took art classes at  L’ Ecole des Arts et des Metiers”. He worked with Pinchinat , Lazard and Luce Turnier.  In 1953, he married Luce Turnier’s sister, Nicole whio is also a painter.

From 1946 to 1961, Dorcely exhibited in the United States and France. In 1947, he received the first Prize at a Haitian Exhibition awarded by president Estime Dumarsais. In 1951, he painted the murals of El Rancho Hotel.  

His art is mentioned in all major books namely “ La Peinture Haitienne” by Marie Jose Nadal and Gerald Bloncourt; “Haiti et Ses Peintres” by Philippe Lerebours and “Peintres Haitiens” by Gerald Alexis where this latter states “ Dorcely developed his art with total assurance and in a thoroughly personal style”.  

His paintings are exhibited in many art galleries and Museums namely the Museum of Modern Art and the Hopkins Center art Galleries in New York and Nader’s Art Galleries. His art is highly appreciated and on demand among collectors.
