Booz Ludovic
Ludovic Booz was born on June 16, 1940 in Aquin, Haiti. He started painting at an early age with anything that came to hand: pencil, pen or charcoal.
In 1946, he came to Port-au-Prince to settle and in 1960 began study at the Academy of Fine Arts. Booz is both a renowned artist and a sculptor.
He started at the Art Center where he encountered Antonio Joseph. He was the first sculptor to use bee wax to treat wood. He has sculpted squares of wood from which he derives spiral forms representing women and motherhood. His concept is very modern. It is said to “sculpt with a brush”, and has an astonishing command of color. According to the art critic, Gérald Alexis, the elongated forms found in all Booz paintings are borrowed from his past as a sculptor.
Among Booz distinctions are the following special commissions: bronze bust of President François Duvalier for the ESSO Salon; bronze bust of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas and the bust of President Dumarsais Estimé.
Booz art works have been exhibited namely in the United States, Israel, France & Surinam. His name is mentioned in most of the Haitian art books.
