Dambreville Claude

Claude Dambreville was born in Port-au-Prince on December 17, 1934. He studied accounting and worked for some months as a trainee at the “ Haiti Journal” newspaper. He was also the director of a broadcasting station “ Radio Tropiques” for ten years. Author of over 100 tales and short stories, Dambreville is also a humorous writer. He published a series of feuilletons in the newspaper” Le Nouvelliste” and a novel titled “ Coup de Tonnerre” . He has been associated with the Review “ France-Amérique”.

Claude Dambreville studied drawing and painting at the School ABC in Paris, at the Art Center, and with his father in-law, the late Haitian artist Pétion Savain.

He succeeded rapidly in establishing his techniques on solid grounds, mastering drawing and coloring altogether. Firstly, a passionate portrait-painter, he gave up portraiture to show a trend towards the scenes of rural life. Being very attracted by the effects of light, these scenes permit him to better oppose them, but without failing into the chiaroscuro. The light he tries to represent is a Haitian light that inundates and destroys the color, just as it reduces the volume and limits the space. Very close to the hyperrealists, he is however quite different from them. In his paintings, he is looking for poesy instead of being realistic, and, in doing so, he relieves, simplifies and makes a choice, whence his strength and originality. Dambreville is a well-known Haitian painter around the world. Art collectors and art lovers dispute his art.
